Since that time, CSA has performed over 40,000 open-heart operations, meeting their goal and providing many firsts for the hospital, state, and country. In 1985, they performed Tennessee's first heart transplant operation. Since 1993, CSA has performed an average of 20 heart transplants a year. Since 1994, they have used HeartMate, a mechanical left ventricular assist device, as a temporary bridge to heart transplantation. In 1991, St. Thomas Hospital established a Cryopreserved Homograft Valve Bank, allowing CSA to replace aortic roots and perform the Ross procedure.
